My Etsy shop

I make and sell doll clothes.  Many of them are one of a kind and made out of scrap materials.  I try to update often with new historical doll clothes.

Re: My Etsy shop

Wow, those outfits are impressive!

(I'm curious about the 'Autism Awareness' dress, though - you say you donate some of that money to autism research? Which organisations do you donate that money to? There are some groups that actually benefit autistic people more than others. Also, the puzzle piece to represent autism is controversialamongst autistic people. I don't mean to antagonise you or anything - I'm autistic myself and am just curious.)

Re: My Etsy shop

The Autism Awareness dresses started out as a collaboration with a friend whose son is severely autistic.  My other friend has two daughters who are autistic.

I did some research on ribbon colors and all I could find was the puzzle piece fabric.  At the time of my research I could not find any arguments for or against the puzzle piece fabric.  I had asked my two friends and they said it was "fine."

I sincerely apologize to anyone whom I have upset by using that fabric.  I did not know it was controversial and shall refrain from ever using it again in the future.

My two friends support "Autism Speaks" so I've donated the money there unless otherwise requested.  One buyer did ask that I donate to the ASPCA as their child loved animals so I did as per their request.

Re: My Etsy shop

I'm glad to see you'll use a different style without puzzle pieces next time. If you're not specifically in the autistic community you may or may not hear about the arguments against the puzzle piece motif to represent autism.

Also, it's good that you want to help autistic people, but... Autism Speaks does not help autistic people. Very little of the money they receive actually goes towards helping autistic people and their families, they demonise and stigmatise autistic people and they claim to speak for autistic people without including us in their staff. They're not actually very good at what they claim to do.

Better organisations include the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network or the Autism Society of America.

(You can also search the board for mention of Autism Speaks - there have been a few threads mentioning it, written by autistic people.)

Re: My Etsy shop

Thanks for letting me know!  I'll notify my two friends as well about that.  They may not know.

I'm not directly involved in the Autism community and the closest I've come to is working with Autistic children.

Thank you for the links and notifying me of all of this.  I will be sure to pass it along!  My aunt might be interested in it as well.  She's an RN who works with Autistic children.

Edited for clarity.

Re: My Etsy shop

Glad to help. A LOT of parents don't know the harm Autism Speaks causes, mostly because A$ advertises really aggressively to parents. :/

Re: My Etsy shop

You make some cool stuff! I like your "people clothes" too. I have a weakness for historical costuming.

Thank you.  So do I.    I blame my grandpa and mom for that!
